    • Chung Chịu Chơi but we r hidding a big lost during the wars. from a powerful economical country turning into poor. even we r slowly developing but...
    • Lieu Nguyen What can you do in our generation Kevin Nguyen ? As you know China is current enemy it gradually take the regions of our sea , especially the two group of Parecel & spatly Islands .... Do not just look back to the bygones , guy !
    • Original Oatmeal What is the definition to "Defeat?"
    • Kevin Nguyen For this young generation need to dedicate their talent , studying and working hard to join hand in contributing vietnam's development economy more becoming super power country.
    • Original Oatmeal I want to understand the word "Defeat."
    • Kevin Nguyen There's a battle between two sides and one side overcome or beat the enemy than being called defeated hoho
    • Lieu Nguyen oh you are good guy but what is your criteria to protect our lovely country , we must look at the truth that where we are in now the draw out the right way to perform it gradually
    • Original Oatmeal How many sides are there?
    • Kevin Nguyen well obviously two sides
    • Original Oatmeal Why not only one side?
    • Lieu Nguyen Speaking is too easier than doing , guy ! I just put my hope / belief on younger generation .
    • Original Oatmeal What is the alternative?
    • Kevin Nguyen Doing your current job well is the best way for our country
    • Original Oatmeal Is that really an alternative?
    • Kevin Nguyen hoho this's not a debate .of course it's not the alternative
    • Michael Nobles They obviously were not conventional defeats. Diem Bien Phu was a gamble- even Giap admitted this. The Vietn Mihn was on the brink of ruin.

President Eisenhower considered helping the French but he didn't think the Viet Mihn were in such a deplorable condition.
    • Michael Nobles And as for the US- even Ho Chi Mihn would agree: the US defeated itself.
    • Kevin Nguyen Being smart in arranging battle it's extremely important to defeat to enemy. know well our own background as well enemy strenghts

    • Michael Nobles Well, if that's you criteria, Keven, then the Americans won that war. The Vietcong/ NVA got their asses destroyed by the US Army/ Marines.
    • Michael Nobles "'You know you never defeated us on the battlefield,' said the American colonel. The North Vietnamese colonel pondered this remark a moment. 'That may be so,' he replied, 'but it is also irrelevant.'"
—Colonel Harry G. Summers Jr. and Colonel Tu, April 1975, described in the book On Strategy.

    • Michael Nobles We were also good at killing South Vietnamese leaders, namely Ngo Dihn Diem. Such a act threw S. Vietnam into chas and allowed The North to move in for the kill.
    • Kevin Nguyen Yep.i dont' like mentioning about this too much. we are living in peaceful country now. Those history story always remind how to value current moments and respect our forefathers for their dedications.
    • Michael Nobles My current research topic is Sino-Vietnamese relations, btw, Keving. Specifically, directed towards that Parecel Islan dispute, and ASEAN influence in the SOuth China Sea.
    • Kevin Nguyen Yep this kinda controversial issue indeed. but that's not our own task. this about our national affair
    • Kevin Nguyen And from a long long time ago. our country always being alert on protecting vietnamsese soil. there's are many threats and they want to annex our soil becming their part
    • Original Oatmeal Michael, the U.S. defeated itself? Does that mean that the U.S. is defeated now?
    • Michael Nobles Yes, the US defeated itself. It lost by overthrowing the regime of Diem and allowing things to progress into chaos, between 1963-65. Obviously, Giap never defeated the Americans on the field of battle, but he didn't have to. The Tet offensive was obvio...See More
    • Original Oatmeal Does the word "Defeat" mean "Conquered?"
    • Michael Nobles Well, if you want to split hairs, the US itself was never defeated- just the South Vietnamese.
    • Michael Nobles In the end, the US abandoned Saigon and the Nguyen government.
    • Original Oatmeal Did the United States force the Southern Vietnamese to do things that they did not want to do that were totally and absolutely against their free-will? Were they excited when Vietnam finally won their "Freedom" from the USA?
    • Michael Nobles That is a loaded question. The Diem regime was overthrown out of fear of US reaction, not because Diem was hated.

As for excited: depends on who you ask. I'm sure the "boat people", or the S. Vietnamese thrown into reeducation camps weren't excited abotu the fall of Saigon.
    • Original Oatmeal As I have been living in Vietnam for these past 10 months since 2013 November, Vietnamese people tell me that they are excited that they won their freedom from the United States. People say good things about Obama. They are surprise that I don't like Obama. Ironically, on one hand, they like Obama, and yet on the other hand, why don't people wave American USA flags around in Vietnam? Instead, I see flags of France and the U.K. So, is the United Kingdoms suppose to be cooler than the USA?
