They obviously were not conventional defeats. Diem Bien Phu was a gamble- even Giap admitted this. The Vietn Mihn was on the brink of ruin.
President Eisenhower considered helping the French but he didn't think the Viet Mihn were in such a deplorable condition.

And as for the US- even Ho Chi Mihn would agree: the US defeated itself.

Well, if that's you criteria, Keven, then the Americans won that war. The Vietcong/ NVA got their asses destroyed by the US Army/ Marines.

"'You know you never defeated us on the battlefield,' said the American colonel. The North Vietnamese colonel pondered this remark a moment. 'That may be so,' he replied, 'but it is also irrelevant.'"
—Colonel Harry G. Summers Jr. and Colonel Tu, April 1975, described in the book On Strategy.

We were also good at killing South Vietnamese leaders, namely Ngo Dihn Diem. Such a act threw S. Vietnam into chas and allowed The North to move in for the kill.

Yes, the US defeated itself. It lost by overthrowing the regime of Diem and allowing things to progress into chaos, between 1963-65. Obviously, Giap never defeated the Americans on the field of battle, but he didn't have to. The Tet offensive was obvio

Did the United States force the Southern Vietnamese to do things that they did not want to do that were totally and absolutely against their free-will? Were they excited when Vietnam finally won their "Freedom" from the USA?

That is a loaded question. The Diem regime was overthrown out of fear of US reaction, not because Diem was hated.
As for excited: depends on who you ask. I'm sure the "boat people", or the S. Vietnamese thrown into reeducation camps weren't excited abotu the fall of Saigon.

As I have been living in Vietnam for these past 10 months since 2013 November, Vietnamese people tell me that they are excited that they won their freedom from the United States. People say good things about Obama. They are surprise that I don't like Obama. Ironically, on one hand, they like Obama, and yet on the other hand, why don't people wave American USA flags around in Vietnam? Instead, I see flags of France and the U.K. So, is the United Kingdoms suppose to be cooler than the USA?
