Usually the do have beliefs in higher powers Joey Arnold. Just not the same beliefs as you, in other words, not Jesus.

    Really what does it matter?

    Romans 14

    New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
    The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept those whose faith is weak. Don’t judge them where you have differences of opinion.

2 The faith of some people allows them to eat anything. But others eat only vegetables because their faith is weak. 3 People who eat everything must not look down on those who do not. And people who don’t eat everything must not judge those who do. God has accepted them.

4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servants? Whether they are faithful or not is their own master’s concern. They will be faithful, because the Lord has the power to make them faithful.

5 Some people consider one day to be more holy than another. Others think all days are the same. Each person should be absolutely sure in his own mind. 6 Those who think one day is special do it to honor the Lord. Those who eat meat do it to honor the Lord. They give thanks to God. Those who don’t eat meat do it to honor the Lord. They also give thanks to God.

7 We don’t live for ourselves alone. And we don’t die all by ourselves. 8 If we live, we live to honor the Lord. If we die, we die to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

9 Christ died and came back to life. He did this to become the Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 Now then, who are you to judge your brother or sister? Why do you look down on them? We will all stand in God’s courtroom to be judged. 11 It is written,

“‘You can be sure that I live,’ says the Lord.
‘And you can be just as sure that every knee will bow down in front of me.
Every tongue will tell the truth to God.’” (Isaiah 45:23)

12 So we will all have to explain to God the things we have done.

13 Let us stop judging one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put anything in your brother’s way that would make him trip and fall.

14 I am absolutely sure that no food is “unclean” in itself. I say this as one who belongs to the Lord Jesus. But some people may consider a thing to be “unclean.” If they do, it is “unclean” for them. 15 Your brothers and sisters may be upset by what you eat. If they are, you are no longer acting as though you love them. So don’t destroy them by what you eat. Christ died for them. 16 Don’t let something you consider good be spoken of as if it were evil.

17 God’s kingdom has nothing to do with eating or drinking. It is a matter of being right with God. It brings the peace and joy the Holy Spirit gives.

18 Those who serve Christ in this way are pleasing to God. They are pleasing to people too.

19 So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up.

20 Don’t destroy the work of God because of food. All food is “clean.” But it is wrong for you to eat anything that causes someone else to trip and fall. 21 Don’t eat meat if it will cause your brothers and sisters to fall. Don’t drink wine or do anything else that will make them fall.

22 No matter what you think about those things, keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who do not have to feel guilty for what they allow.

23 But those who have doubts are guilty if they eat. Their eating is not based on faith. Everything that is not based on faith is sin.

  • Lincoln Phipps The 2004 study used depressed inpatients (N=371) and then compared suicide. So it is not in "atheists" but in depressed non-religious.

Now the twist - there is a greater correlation between religion and depression.

Correlation is not causation but w
hat we do know helps reduce suicide ideation and risk is to have mental health care. That completely reduces the incidences of suicide across the board.

The Conservapedia article and the many religious people that promote that crap understanding of the numbers are what harms society by selling "religion" when actually religion just appears to correlate with higher depression.

That's like selling booze to the drunk to reduce hangovers.

A proper assessment of the numbers says to provide mental health care.

So Armin how about you stop promoting crap that kills people and promote the provision of mental health care ?

  • Armin Wolff For those of you who don't bother to look at links or read anything you disagree with, here is another piece of evidence about atheists.

(( Pitzer College sociologist Phil Zuckerman compiled country-by-country survey, polling and census numbers relati
ng to atheism, agnosticism, disbelief in God and people who state they are non-religious or have no religious preference. These data were published in the chapter titled "Atheism: Contemporary Rates and Patterns" in The Cambridge Companion to Atheism, ed. by Michael Martin, Cambridge University Press: Cambridge, UK (2005). In examining various indicators of societal health, Zuckerman concludes about suicide:

"Concerning suicide rates, this is the one indicator of societal health in which religious nations fare much better than secular nations. According to the 2003 World Health Organization's report on international male suicides rates (which compared 100 countries), of the top ten nations with the highest male suicide rates, all but one (Sri Lanka) are strongly irreligious nations with high levels of atheism. It is interesting to note, however, that of the top remaining nine nations leading the world in male suicide rates, all are former Soviet/Communist nations, such as Belarus, Ukraine, and Latvia. Of the bottom ten nations with the lowest male suicide rates, all are highly religious nations with statistically insignificant levels of organic atheism."[10] ))

He also cites the WHO report on male suicide rates, with which of course you can disagree with, like anything else you don't like.

God never makes even the slightest attempt to prove his existence, but simply says that anyone who denies his existence is a fool. (Psalms 14:1)

I actually did not think that the suicide rate among atheists is higher than other groups, but
my curiosity was piqued by James Daniel Logan on this thread, so I decided to ask Mr. Google, and that is one of the things he came up with. I was surprised that there is such a correlation.

//...The religious have been desperate to kill atheists for centuries...//
I do not think that any religious group, including militant jihadist Islamists particularly single out atheists for beheading or other persecutions. Almost all religions have persecuted and ostracized people who did not want to adhere to their particular brand of belief. Since there were only a relatively few atheists in the past, compared to adherents of some religion, they were never singled out for persecution. Even in "enlightened" Western countries, atheists are in the minority still today.

Jesus Christ did not come to Earth to start another religion, because there were plenty of them already in his day, Jesus never advocated the death of anyone for simply failing to believe his words. He did however think that death was too good for someone who leads innocent children who believe in him away from God. (Matthew 18:6)
  • Lincoln Phipps Armin Wolff, I see but given Google has the age of the Earth as 4.54 billion years I think you're being a bit disingenuous there as I didn't think you accepted that fact. You said your words - you can't blame Google.

    The non-religious are growing very
well in the western world (last poll has the UK for example at 48% non-religious). "atheists" are just part of this larger group though I'm happy if people keep thinking that atheists are a minority and I envisage that eventually atheism will fade away. That will be because there will be no theism for there to be atheism.
  • Joey Arnold Every human is aware of Jesus, whether they call Jesus by another name or not. It does not matter what you believe in. What matters is truth. We all have that intuition of a higher power, and some of us call it Zeus, Buddha, money, love, power, Greek gods, Ra, demons, angels, karma, good luck, bad luck, superstition, Mother Earth, the Mormon God, the Jehovah Witness God, Ying, Yang, African gods, Native American gods, Asian gods, the god of thunder, Cronos, Allah, animals, animal spirits, ghosts, UFOs, aliens, ourselves, science, Joseph Smith, Disney, believing in ourselves, but we need to realize that the real God, and His name is ultimately Jesus Christ, our creator, sustainer, provider, and potential savior.
