yes, it's definitely worth a day for you to visit Mekong Delta. Because the time is short, only 1 day, you should go on a tour service. I did it last time with a tour for foreign tourists, it cost me $15 yet I found it worth it.
As for tips for Saigon trip, it depends on what type of tourist you are. :P
