What does "Going Dutch" mean?
Unlike · ·
  • Chi Thach Thi Kim I don't know.i know 'dutch' but i don't know 'going dutch'you can expland to me,please.
  • Original Oatmeal Going Dutch means each person must pay money for their own bills, purchases, and things. For example, you must pay for your own food and drinks at cafes and restaurants. This happens when people do not invite you to a free meal, that is when they do not say that it is on them.
  • Chi Thach Thi Kim Thanks,i know.that mean is when you and me go to coffee shop, you will pay meal for yourself,i pay for my meal.i know that is your culture.but in Vietnam when the man and girl go to coffee shop or restaurant the man usually pay for meal.
  • Original Oatmeal No. Wrong. Men usually pay for the meal in every single country in the world, including the USA and Vietnam. Many times, people say that Vietnam is different than the USA because of certain things. However, those certain things are not always true and are moreover stereotypes.

Going Dutch is a usually a less traditional way of doing things. Since Vietnam is usually more traditional, then they are therefore less Dutch. Men usually pay for the meal in Vietnam. Men usually pay for the meal in the USA as well. The majority of men in the world pay for the meal still and historically speaking as well.

There is a higher percentage of neo-traditional ways of doing things in the USA and other countries, but those percentages are still usually in a minority range which means that traditionalism is still a surviving factor in this world. Remember that Vietnam is not the only country in the world. Also remember that the USA and Vietnam do have similarities.

People do not always "Go Dutch" in the USA. Sometimes they do, but they usually do the same exact things that you guys do in Vietnam, believe it or not.
