I tell people I was in the Binh Thanh District. They say, "Oh yeah, the Ben Thanh Market in District 1."

I say to them, you know, when you go on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and over a bridge, where does it take you? This happens with most of the districts. In the USA, different people tend to say things differently. For example, people in my state, Oregon, say "

Most dogs in Vietnam seem to be named "BINH," which sounds the same as the "BINH" in "Binh Thanh District."

To make matters worse, there is also the Binh Tan District as well, which almost sounds the same as Binh Thanh.

OO. Vietnamese is tonal. You have to get it right otherwise they wouldn't know what you are talking about.

If you can't say it perfectly, Binh Chanh and Thanh sound similar. Proximity to D. 1 has nothing to do with it.

Chánh and Thạnh sounds the same if you are focusing on the vowels, that is if you say the vowels wrong and make the same ahhhh sound.

Scott I can recognize how irresponsible I am actually then
. No good communication is a full source of misunderstandings and conflicts, which takes a lot of $$ and time to resolve.
I found this basic information on Vietnamese phonology might be useful for linguistics and voice recognition applications. Anyone interested ?

They are only one letter different and if you can't hear/say the sounds correctly, yes they sound similar.

My point really about when I say Pham Huu Lao is that I can say Huu and Ngu relatively well, but the taxi drivers see a Tay and think "Ah, he must be wanting to go to backpacker hell, of course he is saying Pham Ngu Lau, why would he want to go to Nha Be?!" So, locals will sometimes ruin our beautiful Vietnamese with their wrong intuition!

They do. And I have the utmost respect for them. More so for the listening skills rather than speaking. I struggle so hard to pick out what people are saying.
