Bad Side of Vietnam 0001

Why isn't this page called 'A negative side of Vietnam'?
  • Linh Nguyen Because the positive side of Vietnam doesn't exist

  • Benjamin James Park Tom Affolter - I have no idea what you mean, but it's nice to meet you. I was criticising the negativity that was being directed at Vietnam on this page. Bạn có hiểu không?

  • Tom Affolter Benjamin James Park, I don't think this page is negative. I don't really like some posts here, actually, they make me mad but the concept of the site is just fun. And you have to admit, Vietnam is a little bizarre--in the best way. (I have utterly no affiliation with this site, btw.)

  • Liza Shulyndina i think it is not negativity towards Vietnam in general, but towards certain things in Vietnamese society and culture that annoy or people disagree with. But at the same time, the primary purpose of this group is to laugh at those things, and until recently i was kept that way

  • Tom Affolter No worries. I'm married into a VN family and I feel quite protective of the culture. Nobody wants to beat the obnoxious backpacker tromping through HN who thinks he's the next Alexander the Great more than me. But the best part of VN is that it's so different, right?

  • Benjamin James Park Very true. But I still believe that too many of the posts on this page encourage negative comments and ridicule.

  • Liza Shulyndina Benjamin James Park, there are other groups that are far more positive, the whole point here is that the majority of us either cynics or trolls

  • Linh Nguyen Well, there was once a "positive side of Vietnam". Or you might call it a dream. Back then, when Soviet Russia stood, the propaganda was so good that it actually made people into thinking that they are happy, awesome, isn't it?

You know, everything was positive, everyone was positive, those who dare to be negative was either killed or imprisoned...

Then, Doi Moi happened, with a shift to free market, instead of total central planning, which allow new things to happen. It is the reason why you lot can be here. At the same time, the economic got better, people received better food and education, which in turn increase their resistance to propaganda.

That, my friend, is the reason why I said the positive side of Vietnam no longer exist.

  • Tom Affolter I actually agree with you, and I was pretty mad when I saw some posts here. But I don't know how to manage that, and I guess it's up to the administrator. Good comment, Benjamin James Park.

  • Tom Affolter Another view is, I'm American. I'm used to people saying I'm a fat ugly slob who cant read who eats at McDonalds every day even though I'm thin, highly educated, and I hate junk food. Free speech is OK, even if some of it sucks, right? And it's good for VN. I guess.

  • Karine Le Ben, I'm grateful to you for showing sympathy towards my country, and also I am quite annoyed w other things posted in here too. But if looking at them w positive eyes, most expat (except one person who was banned recently) are still here by choice, meaning that there must be something or someone vietnamese they like ...
But after all, what a few critics and ridiculous comments can do to a country like Vietnam, we have encountered much worse...
I used to really like this site and visit it daily, although it has changed lately by some meaner ppl, but still I do believe in free speech here, not all comment can be positive but once in a while u get to see really lovely ppl who are genuine and enjoy light hearted fun!!!

  • Benjamin James Park The negativity usually only comes from ignorance. I agree that it's nothing to get upset about

  • Dan Kings Ahhh the people of Walmart, we should do a 'People of Bui Vien' page…would give Walmart a run for their money..

  • Tom Affolter The negativity comes from arrogance, and I've never been to a country like Vietnam where I was so utterly ashamed of the amount of "Tay" or Western trash I've seen, except for Thailand. Oh am I venting?

  • Đỗ Vân Hường Linh Nguyen I remember long time ago. Nobody had to buy house, farm, food. We didn't have to pay any pennies for education ... We shared with other house, willing share our small rice with every single beggar - which we called "Đồng bào". We didn't sell fruits in our garden, we shared it with neighbors... this is possitive side may you was too blind to see.
See nowaday, everybody ask government to open economy, as people's wishes,,, nowaday, people works like a dog but can't buy a house, everything is expensive, people have to pay money even just to get in their house. Fun enough.
If you try to blame why Vietnam was too poor. Think twine. Can you explain to me why Vietnam is 2nd in export rice and coffee but nobody easy to find any Vietnamese products around the wide world? They're all under name Made in Thailand, or made in Brazil... do you know why?
just because Vietnam is socialism country, and we don't want to be a bitch of American. something is just like John Lennon got shot! Bam! Just it!

  • Liza Shulyndina Tom, you are whining. Everyone has a right to complain, I bet there are groups like that just for Vietnamese people. Just like there are groups like 'WTF Russia' and etc. While some discontent may come for ignorance, I am sure many people would conclude that there are a lot of things in Vietnam that need to be fixed. Of course, pointless to compare one country to another, but everyone is aware of the issues. It is often that we laugh at them, make fun of them and make cynical comments to not get frustrated. and this frustration stems not so much from ignorance, but from disagreement with how things go on. Of course, u may say - you come to the culture, accept what is given to you in the country and do not try to change it, but everyone tries to change the environment they live in for the better, and discussion and complaints at least are one of the ways to drive your attention away from unfairness and relax and have a giggle about it instead
  • Đỗ Vân Hường Liza Shulyndina I do agree, every country has similar group. Don't be serious. Just for fun!
  • Beau Tindall this has nothing to do with Joey Oatmeal or McDonald's, admin, please delete.
