What is a Potluck?

A Potluck is a Fellowship around food.

You should bring food.

We should share the load.

Many hands make work lighter.

However, you are not required to bring food.

It is only recommended, not required.

There are fundamental differences between these two words.

Sorry Minh, but you are pretty much out-of-date. (I'll assume you are not one of the dozen profiles created by Oatmill--pretty sure you are but give you the benefit of the doubt--and refute with you in a thought-provoking discussion.) Also, note: I cannot take you very seriously with no picture and no information at all on your profile. Right now, it seems like you just want to troll.

Anyways, potlucks are events were attendees bring a dish to contribute to the whole "pot," where pot is a metaphor for the whole, as in a table for everyone to eat.
It is true that not ALL (because using logic here, you can show proof that there is at least one potluck where an attendee did not bring a dish and it was OK) potlucks require each attendee to bring a dish. However, it is of mutual agreement that everyone brings a dish to share to these events as a token of appreciation to everyone that has also cooked a dish for everyone. The idea of a potluck is to share and bring people together. By bringing a dish cooked by each person, people are sharing and coming together. Thus, it is totally OK (and really should not be stated) that each person should bring a dish to contribute to the "pot." The event is completely free, all that is required is for you to cook ANYTHING. If you are poor, you can still cook something that does not require much money.

And now I can almost assure you Oatmill = Minh, so I won't discuss any further with someone that has no sense of thought. I would recommend people that do not know what a potluck is, to look it up online or attend one yourself, ignore what Minh and his illusions tell you.
