Saying "Besides the point" sounds better with the added "S" in it, regardless of the possibly grammatical rules that may have been there in the past because the English language is always changing and the letter "S" makes it easier to say and makes it sounds better, which is what I care about more than the proper English rules.
I teach English in Vietnam for the past 12 months and beyond. I tell people that I teach my own version of English.

Hi, Emma. That's really helpfull. You have an interesting thing in your lessons. First, you don't treat your pupils like they are retards, and that's important. Haha. Well, then, an interesting fact that I'd like to share is, in Portuguese, besides (as in except and in in addition) is used exactly the same way. Like "quem, além de Han Solo e Chewbacca, estava no restaurante?" ou "nenhuma nave, além da Millennium Falcon, consegue voar tão rápido". Thanks for the lesson. :)
